Hong Kong has several “roads through buildings,” but the oldest and most well-known example is about to become history.

The elevated Gascoigne Road (b. 1977) was literally built through an existing parking garage, the Yau Ma Tei Carpark (b. 1957).

After years of delays, t he carpark is finally slated for redevelopment and will be permanently closed by January 2021.

So what’s happening?

Is the building being taken down around it, the road diverted or all the above?

The answer is yes!

...not sure what the specific plan is, will have to check again later when I’m done with work stuff.

The one in Osaka is probably the most famous in the world.

Yeah HK has some other less notable ones.  But unlike ‘Murica, it’s blanketed in speed cameras :(

Being from Chicago, the idea of a road going through a building was always no big deal to me. Downtown Chicago is built over all kinds of stuff (fun fact - ‘ground level’ is not at ground level in the Loop and even many neighborhoods beyond).

In Boston, you can drive under, but not through.

LOL - - I remember years ago (probably 15-20) one of the dog tracks in WI put up a billboard on I94 (just south of Milwaukee IIRC) that said, “The only thing faster is a car with Illinois plates!”

So I’m not sure what will become of the site of the carpark.

But the road will be obsoleted by several very ambitious infrastructure projects going on in central Kowloon.

The old single-lane “thoroughfare” through the area will be replaced by a large underground highway tunnel passing from West Kowloon to East Kowloon, continuing under the old airport at Kai Tak, then finally linking up to another major tunnel project to Tseung Kwan O (historically, “Junk Bay”).

It’s actually kind of scary how much road traffic they’re attempting to divert underground to relieve congestion.

Another incredible decade-long project was recently completed on the Hong Kong Island side, the Central-Wanchai Bypass which created an all-new highway right underneath the famous downtown waterfront.
